Africa on the Ground

Myths

Africa is a continent, not a country

Fifty-four countries, and the biggest has about 1,900 times more people than the smallest.

In the record

The idea

It is easy to hear "Africa" used as if it were one place, with one government, one language and one story. It is not.

Fifty-four countries

The World Bank gives figures for 54 countries in Africa.[1] The African Union's own list has 55 members: these 54 and the Sahrawi Republic, which is not one of the 54 here.[2] The United Nations sorts the 54 into five statistical subregions, which it says are for convenience and imply nothing about political ties.[3]

Together the 54 hold about 1.55 billion people and about 30.1 million square kilometres, sums calculated here from the World Bank's figures.[4][5]

How different they are

Nigeria has about 237.5 million people. Seychelles has about 122,700.[4] The largest has roughly 1,900 times more people than the smallest, a ratio calculated here.[4]

Algeria covers about 2.38 million square kilometres. Seychelles covers 460.[5] That is more than 5,000 times as much, calculated here.[5]

A country of 123,000 people and one of 237 million cannot be described by a single average, and neither can the continent that holds them.

What we do not know
  • The count of countries depends on whom you count. The World Bank list has 54 and the African Union 55, because of the Sahrawi Republic; other territories are not counted by either.
  • Population is a 2025 estimate and area a 2023 value; both are from the World Bank and are not census figures.
  • The ratios are our own arithmetic on those figures.
